Installation

Moka needs Node.js 20+ (or Docker). Pick the style that suits you:

npx (no install)

npx @mokalabs/sandbox

Always runs the latest version. Great for trying things out.

Global

npm install -g @mokalabs/sandbox
moka                    # same as npx @mokalabs/sandbox
moka --help

Project (create-moka)

npm create moka@latest my-demo     # or: pnpm create moka / yarn create moka
cd my-demo
npm install
npm start

Creates a folder with moka.json, example skills and @mokalabs/sandbox pinned as a dev dependency — commit it and your whole team gets the same demo.

Docker

docker run --rm -p 4000:4000 -e OPENAI_API_KEY ghcr.io/mokahq/moka

What gets created

Override the data directory with MOKA_HOME. See environment variables.

Note

MCP servers you add often run through npx (Node) or uvx (Python). Install uv if you want to use Python servers like mcp-server-fetch or mcp-server-git. The Docker image includes both.

Updating

npx @mokalabs/sandbox always fetches the latest release. For global installs run npm install -g @mokalabs/sandbox@latest. Your config and chats are kept.
